Dec 18, 2023 · Yes essentially 0 & 5w20 are the same. Ohio gets cold but not enough for a 0 and 5w be noticeable especially if your vehicle is garaged. What's not the same are the oils. The 0w20 is a better-built oil. It's why most passenger vehicle manufacturers have opted-out of using 5w20 in the engine factory.

In addition the 2015 models their recommending 6,000 mile oil change instead the 7,500 mile oil change. You would think they did allot of testing before coming out to say do a 7,500 mile oil change.
Subaru has been using 0W-20 for almost a decade now. The old EJ motors are what you are thinking about. His is a different engine entirely. No. Do what the people who designed it say. If you check your owners manual, it might say you can run 5W-20 for one oil change but will have to do 0W-20 for the next service.

Use 5w-30 and you'll eliminate consumption issues and have a quieter engine. If you're in a high ambient market consider 10w-30.

Btw… you can also use a LL-4 rated oil where a LL-1 oil is spec’d, but not vice versa! Maybe who ever changed you oil put too much oil in the engine.
